A guide to routine dental check-ups, what to expect, and why they matter
Eco-Friendly Dentistry accounts for the undeniable fact that oral health is fundamental to the health of the human body as a whole in all that we do. And good oral hygiene is essential to oral health. The oral hygiene that we support blends consistent and thorough home care with quality professional care at our Oak Lawn, Illinois office.
For healthy individuals in and around Chicago Ridge, Hometown, Evergreen Park, Burbank, Beverly, Worth, Hickory Hills, Palos Heights, and Palos Hills, professional care generally means routine visits to our office two times each year. Six-month “check-ups” include cleanings and exams.
The importance of professional cleanings
Brushing and flossing help to remove food particles that promote the development of harmful plaque. This healthy habit further minimizes plaque build-up. However, plaque is constantly forming on the teeth. No one can remove all of this bacterial film. This is where our skilled dental hygienists come into play; they have the tools and expertise to gently and effectively remove stubborn plaque build-up. They also remove surface stains and polish the teeth – to promote a stunning smile and fresh breath!
The importance of oral exams
Our dentist, Dr. Ahmed Mataria also evaluates the health of your teeth, gums, and mouth during these check-ups and following your cleaning. They use advanced diagnostic imaging to accurately and safely pinpoint problems in their earliest stages for what cannot be seen with the naked eye alone. Early-stage enamel erosion and gingival inflammation, for instance, often produce little to no symptoms.
So, by the time patients may notice changes such as bleeding, it may be too late. The damage has already been done and may require extensive restorative dental work to preserve the affected tooth and tissues.
Additionally, we regularly “screen” for oral abnormalities. Persistent sores, lumps, bumps, and areas of discoloration can be indicative of oral and pharyngeal pre-cancers and cancers. These cancers are highly treatable when detected in their earliest stages before they have spread to other parts of the mouth and face or body.
Invaluable guidance
Many professional preventative services can also be integrated easily into the check-up. For example, fluoride supplements may be warranted to build up tooth minerals and protect the teeth from damage caused by enamel erosion and tooth decay. Likewise, dental sealants may be appropriate for both children and at-risk adults. These biocompatible materials are applied to the back teeth to “seal out” the food particles and bacteria that cause cavities. Nine of every ten cavities develop in the molars and premolars due to the location of these teeth and their grooved surfaces, which trap plaque.
Our team as a whole is also privileged to provide tailored recommendations on everything from oral care products to brushing and flossing techniques to nutrition and diet.
